Atal’s afro-centric work fuses African and Western materials and styles to create a simple, original look. She incorporates a wide range of fabrics, including linen, environmentally friendly bark cloth, organic cotton and recycled materials.

In addition to designing her own line, Atal teaches fashion to aspiring designers and she uses her talent to serve underprivileged communities, especially the girl child in Kampala and Northern Uganda, and women affected by HIV/AIDs. She helps communities develop self-sustaining businesses painting or making crafts and clothes, there are people that I see have a potential of using their hands – could be making crafts, painting, or making fashion. Create income generating opportunities. Encourage creative expression. I teach people in the communities how to sustain themselves.

Teaching aspiring Ugandan designers technical skills and find their own voice. Some are now working in the industry. Give a chance of hope. They are needed in the society. To forget about the past and create a new life doing something that doesn’t harm anyone.

“I want my fashion to be connected to the community. To be part of the community. I’ve gone some miles, I want to pull people that are behind.”
