Qwela is a 4 year old band from Uganda with a unique afro-soul flavour of music. Qwela means ‘pure’ in rukiga- one of Uganda’s ethnic languages. Raised in a traditional African background and influenced by western culture, Qwela as a band have come up with a unique fusion of African music with a Western musical approach.
Their niche- reaches a section of society that is not catered for by the current of digital, recycled music. Cut from different pieces of fabric, Qwela has come to the scene with a unique blend of African music.
Three years ago, Qwela first came together as a group of session artists to play for private events. Inspired by the spontaneity and beauty of live fusion performance, the band began to slowly gravitate towards forming a steadier group. Some of the original members drifted away and some new members drifted in and eventually formed what has become recognized as a unique soul Afro groove on the Ugandan scene.
Qwela recorded its first album Kidepo in 2007 and is currently working on the production of the second one. Currently, Qwela Band has become one of the most bookable acts for corporate events and private functions in Kampala and has been reviewed in all the major newspapers, TV and Radio stations in the nation’s capital, Kampala.
The Qwela Band is the official band of the night for the Ugandan Diaspora Social Networking Event. Come and join us as we listen to their scintillating beats and strings.
